CFE18 - CAN bus switch board. CFE18 stands for “CAN Bus Function Extension”, or colloquially “CAN switch board” - what do you need this module for? CAN bus connections in the vehicle sometimes present you with big challenges. Especially in motorsport applications, when the electronics have to be housed in the steering wheel and information from adjustment knobs (trimpots) or push buttons is to be transmitted via CAN bus. CANchecked now offers a small add-on module with 17 inputs: 8 for switches (low side) and 9 for analogue inputs (0-5V signal). A voltage converter for connection to a 12V vehicle electrical system is also already integrated. There are also 3 switching outputs on the board (low side max 0.5A). The CFE18 hardware. At just 29x27mm, the board is very compact and fits anywhere. The pin pitch is 2.54mm - for safety reasons, 3.81mm for the power supply. We have added a hole for mounting that can be used for a screw fixing. CFE18 - CAN bus termination. There is a solder jumper on the board. If you close it, the 120 ohm CAN bus termination is active. The solder jumper is OPEN by default. Motorsport steering wheel. One use case would be a motorsport steering wheel. The picture shows the approximate size; the steering wheel hub is 50mm in diameter. With only 4 connections via a coiled cable, a wide variety of inputs can be transmitted via CAN bus. Connection options. Both switches and trimpots (adjustment knobs) can be connected to the CFE18. But sensors such as oil pressure, fuel pressure, boost pressure, exhaust back pressure and integration into your own housing would also be conceivable. Digital outputs. The CFE18 has three digital outputs. These can be loaded up to a maximum of 500mA and switch to ground (LOW SIDE). For this, a CAN bus frame is sent every 100ms (the CAN ID is configurable here - from a 500ms pause between frames, the timeout is activated and the outputs are deactivated): (0=inactive, 1=active) AIN smoothing. If the analogue inputs fluctuate too much, they can be smoothed by software. This can be configured separately for each analogue input. The analogue inputs are evaluated with every transmission (default 20Hz). So if, for example, a smoothing factor of 4 is set, the average of the last 16 measurements is taken. This makes the value steadier (smoother), but it also reacts more slowly to fluctuations. You have to find a healthy middle ground here. The setting is made via CAN bus.
